Lessons for Asteroseismology from White Dwarf Stars

چکیده
The interpretation of pulsation data for Sun-like stars is currently facing challenges quite similar to those faced by white dwarf modelers ten years ago. The observational requirements for uninterrupted long-term monitoring are beginning to be satisfied by successful multi-site campaigns and dedicated satellite missions. But exploration of the most important physical parameters in theoretical models has been fairly limited, making it difficult to establish a detailed bestfit model for a particular set of oscillation frequencies. I review the past development and the current state of white dwarf asteroseismology, with an emphasis on what this can tell us about the road to success for asteroseismology of other types of stars.

Gravitational Radiation from Pulsating White Dwarfs
Rotating white dwarfs undergoing quasi-radial oscillations can emit gravitational radiation in a frequency range from 0.1 − 0.3 Hz. Assuming that the energy source for the gravitational radiation comes from the oblateness of the white dwarf induced by the rotation, the strain amplitude is found to be ∼ 10 for a white dwarf at ∼ 50 pc. The galactic population of these sources is estimated to be ...
متن کاملWhite Dwarf Asteroseismology and the 12c(α,γ)16o Rate
Due to a new global analysis method, it is now possible to measure the internal composition of pulsating white dwarf stars, even with relatively simple theoretical models. The precise internal mixture of carbon and oxygen is the largest single source of uncertainty in ages derived from white dwarf cosmochronometry, and contains information about the rate of the astrophysically important, but ex...
متن کاملWhite Dwarf Rotation: Observations and Theory
White dwarfs rotate. The angular momentum in single white dwarfs must originate early in the life of the star, but also must be modified (and perhaps severely modified) during the many stages of evolution between birth as a main– sequence star and final appearance as a white dwarf. Observational constraints on the rotation of single white dwarf stars come from traditional spectroscopy and from ...
متن کاملTime dependent diffusion in pulsating white dwarf stars: Asteroseismology of G117-B15A
We study the structural characteristic of the variable DA white dwarf G117B-15A by applying the methods of asteroseismology. For such a purpose, we construct white dwarf evolutionary models considering a detailed and up to date physical description as well as several processes responsible for the occurrence of element diffusion. We have considered several thickness for the outermost hydrogen la...
متن کاملSeismology of pre-white dwarfs: Models for pulsating sdB stars
Two kinds of pre-white dwarf stars can be probed through asteroseismology: planetary nebula nuclei (PNNs) and sdB (EHB) stars. To exploit the observed pulsations requires models that incorporate state-ofthe-art input physics and realistic evolutionary histories. Pulsation analysis of extensive grids of such models provide self-consistent theoretical pulsation periods for comparison with observe...
